Andrew Sutherland is Senior Director of Technology Solutions Consulting Services for Oracle Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA). He is responsible for the strategy, direction, technical guidance and management of a practice of around 30 consultants engaged in challenging new technology projects. The mission of the group is to develop Oracle's Internet Computing business.
Dr Sutherland has over 13 years experience in emerging technologies and their application to business problems. In particular, his expertise is in the design of solutions incorporating multimedia, mobile and Internet technology. He has managed major projects in emerging technologies in the areas of Healthcare, Security Services, general office automation and logistics.
Since joining Oracle in 1995, Dr Sutherland has focused on the provision of business solutions using the newest technologies; in particular mobile and Internet solutions. He led the British consulting practice dedicated to Internet Electronic Commerce and New Technologies for 1½ years. The practice engaged in projects which exploited the most advanced features of open Internet-based technologies to provide competitive advantage.
Immediately prior to joining Oracle, Dr Sutherland established a high technology company which produced technological solutions to the problems of the sensorially impaired. The company received prestigious innovation awards from the Department of Trade and Industry
Before this he was Deputy Director of the Centre for Speech Technology Research, a R&D consultancy attached to the University of Edinburgh. During his time there, Dr Sutherland helped win and subsequently oversee the development of projects in commerce, industry and the public sector. In 1988, Dr Sutherland designed Britain's first Parallel Processing speech recognition system. Based on parallel processors, it operated in real-time. Under his management, this technology was successfully applied to problems encountered in aviation, medical reporting and police reporting.
Dr Sutherland has over 15 technical publications on multimedia
and business issues, including entries in a major encyclopaedia.
He obtained a 1st Class BSc in Electrical & Electronic Engineering
from Edinburgh University, a PhD in Digital Signal Processing
and an MBA in workflow analysis & introduction of innovative
procedures in healthcare.
