Claude Vogel

Dr Claude Vogel, one of the world's leading authorities on linguistic analysis and categorization, is currently Chief Technology Officer of search technology firm Convera. Vogel is a foremost authority on the cultural and cognitive patterns of social organizations and his studies include the cognitive framework of folk organizations, cognitive engineering, open sources, and corporate information processing. Vogel engages in ongoing research and has published more than 70 pieces, including nine books on the subjects of software engineering, cognitive design, social organizations, and semiotics.

Prior to joining Convera, Vogel was the founder and Chief Technology Officer of Semio Corporation. In 1996 at Semio, Vogel was the first to coin the term “discovery search” and also earned a trademark on the name. He has a background in Anthropology, Semiotics and Artificial Intelligence from the Paris Sorbonne (PhD Social Anthropology, 1976; PhD Cultural Anthropology, 1992).
Vogel also serves as an Associate Professor of Computational Semiotics at the University of Montreal and the University of Albuquerque, and is a member of honor of the French Association for Artificial Intelligence. Vogel's scientific affiliations include the Ethnolinguistics Team of the National Foundation for Scientific Research, Cultural Anthropology Team of the National Foundation for Scientific Research, and Knowledge Representation and Processing Laboratory of the National Foundation for Scientific Research. He is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on taxonomies, search and knowledge management issues.
