Carol Tenopir is a professor at the University of Tennessee,
Knoxville, School of Information Sciences where her subject areas
are the information industry, online reference service and information
access and retrieval. She is also on the Graduate School Faculty
and is an adjunct professor at the College of Communications.
In 1974 she graduated from Whittier College with a BA in English
and History, and in 1976 received an MSc from California State
University, Fullerton. Then she worked in the library at Cibbarelli
and Associates, Huntington Beach, CA as Vice President of Operations.
In 1979 she moved to the University of Manoa as the Library Systems
Librarian. In 1984 she received her PhD from the University of
Illinois at Urbana Chapaign with a dissertation entitled 'Retrieval
Performance in a Full Text Journal Article Database'. Her subsequent,
numerous publications have been in the fields of online databases,
full text databases and libraries in these contexts.
