David Hawking is a Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO, an Australian
Government research organisation. Prior to that he filled a variety
of academic, technical and administrative roles at the Australian
National University. He has been actively researching in the text
retrieval area for most of the last decade and is Coordinator
of the TREC Web Track and a member of the TREC program committee.
He and his group are responsible for the creation and distribution
of a number of standard Web test collections (up to 18.5 million
pages).
David's interests included distributed IR, scalable retrieval,
intranet search, retrieval using combined metadata and content
and search effectiveness evaluation, particularly in the Web context.
Recent publications include 'Scaling up the TREC collection' (IR
journal), 'Results and Challenges in Web Search Evaluation' (WWW9),
and 'Is it Fair to Evaluate Web Systems Using TREC Ad Hoc Methods?'
(SIGIR99 Workshop).
