Lucy Akers is the current chairman of the Patent Information
Users Group, Inc - The International Society for Patent Information.
Lucy received an undergraduate degree from Wheaton College, Norton,
Massachusetts in Chemistry. She is a registered US patent agent
and has held various intellectual property (IP) and information-related
positions, including in Shell Oil and ExxonMobil Chemical. More
specifically, her experience includes: four years as an assistant
in a college library, four years abstracting & indexing proprietary
research and development reports, nine years patent searching
in corporate law departments, two years as a patent liaison and
information services manager, and one year as team leader for
an IP computer systems re-design and implementation programme.
Since relocating from Houston to the London area in mid-2001,
Lucy is providing IP consultancy services and patent research
services, currently focusing primarily on patentability, validity
and opposition searches for law firm clients. She is also contributing
to the Dutch Patent Information Users Group (WON) training course
for new patent information specialists. She much enjoys her current
role as PIUG chairman and also enjoys participating on the Selection
Board for the International Patent Information Award. Lucy has
recently joined the managing committee of the UK Patent and Trademark
Group (PATMG).
